Tucson Audubon Society’s 8th annual Southeast Arizona Birding Festival, presented by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, takes place August 8–12. Hosted at a new venue, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel near Reid Park, this event is the region’s premier birding experience. Visitors come from across the country for the chance to see over 200 species of birds. The Nature Expo is an excellent way for locals and visitors to learn about birds and other southeast Arizona wildlife while escaping the summer heat. The Nature Expo will feature family-friendly activities, workshops, free nature presentations by experts, and a vendor fair. Attendees can learn about birds, enjoy casual, morning bird walks around the venue, and view live birds and other animals up close. Nature Expo hours are: Friday, August 10th from 12-6 pm, Saturday, August 11th from 10 am-6 pm, and Sunday, August 12th from 10 am-2 pm. More info at www.tucsonaudubon.org/expo The keynote presentation, held at the Festival banquet, features Bill Thompson III, lifelong birder, co-publisher of Bird Watcher’s Digest, and the author of many books on birds and nature. His talk, The Perils and Pitfalls of Birding, features a humorous look at birding and birdwatcher habits and will likely end in a sing-along! Southeast Arizona is one of the top birdwatching destinations in the country with many species found here and nowhere else in the U.S. The Festival features expert-led field trips to many of the region’s best sites, such as Madera Canyon and the Chiracahuas, allowing more than 300 people the unique opportunity to view these special birds. “The month of August typically brings the most species at one time. Specifically, hummingbird species reach peak numbers in August, with over 13 different species that can be seen. This variety of hummingbirds is greater than any other place in the United States.” —Jennie MacFarland, Bird Conservation Biologist, Tucson Audubon Society Registration for the 2018 Southeast Arizona Birding Festival, presented by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, is now open.
