Electronic music is in its heyday in America. Whether you’re into EDM, glitch, deep house, booty bass, techno, ambient, whatever, these 15 high-energy festivals will get your heart rate up. Do you like your festivals in urban techno epicenters ( Movement ), or in the midst of crazy gorgeous backdrops ( Paradiso )? The locations may be different, the lineups  slightly varied, but you can expect dazzling visuals, renowned production design, and loving attention to detail across the board. It’s about the atmosphere, that BPM-driven mania. Your choices seem endless, but we've gathered up the best ones to add to your list.

Future Thought: Dave Smith, Dave Rossum, Lars Larsen, Dave Harrington, Suzi Analogue and VHVL, Flatsitter, Jon Gibson

By day, Moogfest operates like a left-of-center academic conference geared toward creative and/or technology professionals. The sunlight programming hours include talks, presentations, panels, workshops, and film screenings with futurist thinkers, inventors, engineers, designers, artists, entrepreneurs, and musicians. At night, the past, present and future of electronic music take various stages throughout downtown Asheville. In 2017, the festival will offer up a dedicated place for resistance at the "Protest Stage," in opposition of Donald Trump's travel ban.

Desert Hearts, Warner Springs, California (March 31 - April 3, 2017)

2017 Lineup : Justin Martin, Dave Seaman, Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Doc Martin, Edu Imbernon, Detlef, Max Chapman, Marques Wyatt, Jozif, Atish, DJ Garth, Sacha Robotti, Ardalan, Oona Dahl, KMLN (live), Monolink (live), m.O.N.R.O.E., The Glitz, Christian Martin

It's only a three-hour drive from Los Angeles and two hours from San Diego, but mentally, the escape to Desert Hearts is worlds away. In just five years, Desert Hearts has come to represent a magical subculture among the expanding mega-festival circuit. An event that’s evolved into a cross between Burning Man and Lightning in a Bottle , the festival’s original 300 attendees in 2012 have grown to top 3,000. There is only one stage, and it pumps house and techno for 100 hours straight. And the people-watching is among the best we've encountered; all the costumes, wigs, masks, onesies and body paint are dazzling creative displays of creativity. Desert Hearts’ ethos focuses on community via creative movement, uncensored and unparalleled personal expression, and a warm focus on the positive energy inside all of us. Desert Hearts founders include a clan of DJs and music-lovers from San Diego: Mikey Lion, David “Porkchop” Leon, Ryan “Deep Jesus” Oreg, Matthew “Marbs” Marabella and Lee Reynolds, who also play in venues across the country and run the Desert Hearts record label.

Euphoria Music Festival, Austin, Texas (April 6 - 9, 2017)

"Euphoria" is the best name an electronic music festival could have. Given the natural high that euphoria delivers, it makes sense that a festival would be named for that emotional enrichment. For the sixth year in a row, Carson Creek Ranch will be home to one of Austin’s hottest festivals. Sitting pretty on the banks of the Colorado River, the festival is an eclectic, four-day sensory extravaganza, a seamless unification of electronic dance music, live bands and more. Make sure to leave time for the Art Outside Village , an offshoot of Austin's on-hiatus Art Outside , a festival known for cutting-edge art installations and galleries. The Village will be a must-see for art lovers. As with most immersive festival experiences, you'll find yoga and workshops, but Euphoria takes the unique offerings one step further by setting aside a special space for marriage ceremonies .

Movement Electronic Music Festival is an elite event in the electronic festival world, what with Detroit being the birthplace of techno and all. Although Michigan's capital has been buffeted with financial instability, a bleak job market and corrupt city officials, the underground scene has never stopped thriving. Voted “Best Niche Festival” by Rolling Stone in 2011 and #1 on the New York Post’s 2010 list of “10 Outstanding Music Fests,” more than 100,000 people make the pilgrimage to Detroit’s Hart Plaza for the festivities every Memorial Day weekend. Stellar lineups are standard as the underground comes up for air; world famous DJs share the bill with trailblazing showcases from Detroit locals. More than just a festival, Movement is a place to celebrate techno’s heritage, discover Detroit’s hottest new artists, and experience stages teeming with interactive technology.

FORM Arcosanti, Arcosanti, Arizona (May 12 - 14, 2017)

2017 Lineup: Solange, James Blake, Skrillex, Bob Moses, Tycho, Father John Misty, Future Islands, Thundercat, Deafheaven, Bing & Ruth, Hundred Waters, How to Dress Well, Shamir

Boutique festivals are all the rage these days, and FORM Arcosanti is the coolest, enlightened kid on the festival block. An experimental festival for Arcosanti’s experimental town, the intimate event only accepts 1,500 attendees each year through an application process that involves essay questions, as a kind of  "personality check." The town of Arcosanti is an “urban laboratory focused on innovative design, community, and environmental accountability… [whose] goal is to actively pursue lean alternatives to urban sprawl based on Paolo Soleri's theory of compact city design, 'Arcology' (architecture + ecology).” In 2017, in an effort to preserve this urban laboratory and expand FORM’s programming (curated by indie rock band Hundred Waters), the festival will charge admission for the first time ever. That $389 fee goes towards thoughtfully curated musical showcases and forward-thinking workshops, speakers and panels.

Part art installation, part light show and 100% pure, unadulterated fun, Electric Forest raises the bar for destination music festivals. It’s as much about the music as much as it is about the setting. Undiscovered magic is everywhere at Electric Forest; the stunning Sherwood Forest is the closest you’ll get to living in a real-life "wonderland." Rooted in both the jam band and electronic music scenes, this five-year-old fest presents surprise performances, interactive art displays and extravagant, illuminated woodland parties. Overall, Electric Forest is so immersive and well-curated that it wins top marks for ambience production value across the board. It's the ultimate electronic enchanted forest.

In just seven years, Spring Awakening has gone from an extended concert series to its birth as the largest music festival in the Midwest. Prepare for a venue change in 2017, from Chicago's Soldier Field, to Jefferson Park, to the now-hosting Addams/Medill Park . Last year, the festival expanded to two main stages, in addition to the Solstice Stage, Equinox Stage, Dancing Astronaut stage, Body Language, Trance Arena, Anjunadeep stage, Bass Kitchen and Sunday SchoolOverall, this is one jam-packed, bass-dropping dance party. Seventy five globe-trotting DJs will cover BPMs ranging from bass music and nu-disco, to electro-funk and dub, and everything in between. And since this is a non-camping festival in the heart of Chicago, the afterparty vibe is strong. Mysteryland USA, Bethel Woods, New York (June 9 - 12, 2017)

Mysteryland Usa 2015 Danilo Lewis For Mysteryland 20

2017 Lineup : G-Eazy, LCD Soundsystem, Major Lazer, Big Gigantic, Die Antwoord, Porter Robinson, RL Grime, Run the Jewels, A-Trak, Anna Lunoe, Art Department, Bob Moses, Clams Casino, Duke Dumont, Flight Facilities, Goldroom, Guy Gerber, Jamie Jones

Only in its third year, Mysteryland USA has proven that it can fill big shoes. As the American counterpart of the ID&T's Belgian behemoth Mysterylandthe fest takes place on Woodstock's hallowed grounds in Bethel Woods, New York. As a brand, Mysteryland’s multi-faceted approach has been a winning formula for no less than two decades. Just like its Belgian parent event, the festival combines electronic music with theatrics, interactive installation art, performance artists and spectacular shows at ostentatiously fun stages. There’s a healthy amount of newcomers in the electronic scene on Mysteryland’s five stages – in addition to legends from the international dance scene, of course. Mysteryland has been a leading pioneer on the dance festival scene in Europe and the U.S. since 1993 and has inspired numerous other organizers and events. The famous Tomorrowland festival, also produced by ID&T, emerged from the key values of the Mysteryland festival. The New York outpost is no different.

Sound, light, art and music converge at Houston's Day for Night to form a festival like no other. Your five senses won't have any choice but to embrace crossing into new sensual landscapes. Now that Decibel  is out of the running as America's coolest technologically progressive festival, the two-year-old Day for Night is primed to take the top spot. Day for Night's lineup boasts today's top innovators in sound and light, and there's no lack of rich sensory experiences available through this cross-pollination of creation. Sonically, this past year's event had everything from noise rock (Lightning Bolt) to 90s rock mainstays (The Jesus and Mary Chain, Blonde Redhead, Butthole Surfers) to sets from film composers (John Carpenter), to Win Butler’s (lead singer of Arcade Fire) DJ Windows 98 project, and electronic music legends Aphex Twin and Björk. On the other side of the coin, top names in visual arts gathered at the 2016 fest, including United Visual Artists, cognitive researcher Golan Levin, Shoplifter, Tundra, Robert Siedel, and Damien Echols. Everywhere you turn, you'll find cutting-edge work in projection mapping, virtual reality, augmented reality, surface display experimentation and mixed-media canvases.

Electric Zoo, New York, New York (September 2017)

Electric Zoo 2016 A Live Coverage For 21

2017 Lineup: TBA

Despite a proximity to electronica-loving Europe and the beats constantly emerging from New York’s storied underground venues, the East Coast's electronic music festival scene has been lacking. That all changed with Electric Zoo . Nestled in the heart of New York City between Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens along the East River, the fest set up shop on Randall's Island in 2012. To many, it's now the top EDM festival on the East Coast. Beyond the monstrous main stage, the Zoo has four other stages ensuring plenty to choose from. Soak up those nightclub vibes at the Hilltop Arena, become one with an octopus at the Riverside Stage, worship the almighty beat in the Sunday School Grove, and branch out with the homies at The Treehouse.

Paradiso, Quincy, Washington (June 23 - 24, 2017)

The Gorge Amphitheater is one of the most scenic festival venues in America. It's also the backdrop for Paradiso Festival , an engrossing electronic retreat for nature and electronic music lovers in the Pacific Northwest – a rarity in the region. With a slogan of “Digital Meets Nature,” the festival's location at the Gorge lends a gorgeous air to the festivities, with the Columbia River in the near distance, and the Cascade Range mountains framing the main stage. The outdoor setup leads to an adjacent campground where the party continues long after the curtain call. Lights, lasers, massive video projections, and electronic music fill the open air, and there’s plenty of room to move around.

Imagine Music Festival, Atlanta, Georgia (September 22 - 24, 2017)

Imagine Music Festival 2016 A Live Coverage 16

2017 Lineup: TBA

Despite a rabid following of fans, electronic dance music festivals have been slow to put down roots in the southern United States. However, exciting changes are afoot, with events like Imagine Music Festival on the front lines. Festival organizer IRIS Presents is known for mind-bending visuals, and Imagine features aesthetics ranging from underwater circus art installations to the elaborately costumed "Iris Girls" roving the grounds. Combine that with an incredible lineup of music to enjoy, and you've got an epic gathering on your hands. IMF has asserted itself as an event that’s here to stay, even amid the sea of existing EDM festivals. The circus-style atmosphere and anything-goes arts scene make it a winner for those seeking a break from reality. It’s clear that IMF's focus is providing a good time to all—wild costumes, playful and wild attitudes, and youthful and uninhibited vibes abound.

CRSSD, San Diego, California (November 2017)

Crssd Festival 2017 Miranda Mc Donald 1 Of 1

Fall 2017/Spring 2018 Lineup: TBA

It's crazy to think CRSSD has only been around for two years. In that short time, the two-day San Diego fest has evolved into a West Coast dance music scene staple. Local San Diegan party purveyors "FNGRS CRSSD " took a cue from esteemed European festivals like Sónar Barcelona or Amsterdam Dance Event by targeting a slightly older demographic that still knows how to party. The low-key, 21+ event quickly found a successful niche by dialing back the grandiosity bombast by delivering something more intimate and personal. In 2016, the fest's strong lineup put quality over quantity. A two-stage setup made it easy to bounce around between artists like Flume, Lane 8, Duke Dumont, Bob Moses, Claude Von Stroke, Justin Martin and more.

SnowGlobe, South Lake Tahoe, California (December 2017)

What better way to ring in the new year than with 15,000 of your closest electronic music-loving friends in South Lake Tahoe's winter wonderland? Part dance music festival, part ski/snowboard adventure and all New Year's Eve celebration (complete with fireworks!), SnowGlobe Music Festival calls up more than 50 artists to help you do New Year's right. The electronic-heavy festival boasts big-name DJs, on-the-brink buzz bands and underground rappers in genres spanning avant-garde electropop, post-dubstep, booty house, hip-hop. Oh yeah, and instead of stiltwalkers and stage acrobats, expect to see pro skiers and snowboarders back-flipping off jumps next to the stage.

Honorable Mention

Holy Ship!, Cape Canaveral, Florida (January 2018)

2018 lineup: TBA

This just passed, but, by sea, by land, or by beach, Holy Ship!  is one of the most sought-after tickets around, and it's never too early to start planning. Passionate aficionados (lovingly dubbed "ShipFam") trek to Florida in the middle of cold January for two back-to-back weekends with artists like Fatboy Slim, Skrillex, Diplo, A-Trak, Boys Noize, Steve Aoki, and the Dirtybird crew. Who wouldn't want to float on a massive cruise ship to the Bahamas for some quality rage time with your favorite DJs and closest friends? Snow and frigid temps are not on the guest list for this one, but big-name DJs, 24/7 parties, and a strong costume game definitely are.
