Trying to navigate your way through the schedule for the South By Southwest music festival is not for the faint of heart. Thousands of musicians will descend on Austin, TX between Mar. 17 to 22 to perform countless showcases in the hopes of getting radio play, blog mentions, label deals, Instagram followers, fame and notoriety. But with only a few hours to spare between grubbing on BBQ and downing free Shiner Bock beer, how do you figure out whether you should catch Moon Duo, Moon Honey or Moon Tooth? Easy. Here’s a rundown of acts we think will create some of the most unforgettable moments at this year's shindig.

Catfish Press Primarytalent

Catfish and the Bottlemen
Hometown:
Llandudno, Wales

That name may induce Hootie and the Blowfish flashbacks, but don't let that throw you off. Young U.K. rockers Catfish and the Bottlemen go in for the kill on their debut album, The Balcony, which was produced by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian) and released on Communion Records (the label co-founded by Mumford and Sons' Ben Lovett). Listen to their soaring introductory single "Kathleen" and get ready to stand in a really, really long line to get a glimpse of the band in action.

Waxahatchee Mergerecords

Waxahatchee
Hometown:
Birmingham, AL

Under the unpronounceable but highly Google-able name Waxahatchee, singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield performs strikingly intimate songs that often have the feel of pages ripped from her diary. On her forthcoming third album, Ivy Tripp, stormy guitars and ominous rhythms give her quiet confessionals extra muscle. We expect a night of many gut-punches and tears.

R.I.Y.L.: Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Sharon Van Etten

Bomba Polenrecords

Bomba Estéreo
Hometown:
Bogota, Colombia

An electronic dance music project out of Bogota, Colombia, Bomba Estéreo is performing as part of the free outdoor concert at Auditorium Shores that also features the Latin music acts Intocable and Compass. The group's explosive, adventurous tunes should leave everyone a sweaty mess.

R.I.Y.L.:
Nortec Collective, Calle 13, Plastilina Mosh

Brogan Stonesthrowrecords

Brogan Bentley
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

The San Francisco fog seeps its way into Brogan Bentley’s ethereal electronic music. His dark-hued, slow rolling compositions make him stand out from the pack but it’s his ghostly, soulful voice that gives his debut album, The Snake, real bite.

R.I.Y.L.: The xx, James Blake, Toro y Moi

Alvvays Polyvinyl

Alvvays
Hometown:
Toronto, Canada

Alvvays is a Canadian band with Californian dreams. Singer Molly Rankin's faraway voice gives songs like "Archie, Marry Me" (Ben Gibbard's “favorite song of the year”) and "Next of Kin" a sweet vintage gloss while guitars jangle unapologetically. Don’t leave your cardigan at home.

R.I.Y.L.: Best Coast, Camera Obscura, Dum Dum Girls

Rae Interscoperecords

Rae Sremmurd
Hometown:
Tupelo, MS

Brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, who make up the unhinged hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd, have already scaled the charts with the single "No Flex Zone." Now they're looking to secure their crossover bid with their full-length debut, SremmLife, an exuberant and joyful throwback to rap's backward overall sporting glory days.

R.I.Y.L.: Kriss Kross, Nicki Minaj, Lil Bow Wow

Courtneybarnett Mompopmusic

Courtney Barnett
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia

Twenty-something Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett can make even her allergies sound rock and roll, as evidenced by her best-known tune “Avant Gardener” and “Dead Fox,” a song taken from her forthcoming debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Not only does she have a way of making the mundane seem extraordinary but pairs it with fuzz-pedal drenched rock and country goodness.

R.I.Y.L.: Angel Olsen, Parquet Courts, The Lemonheads

Falke Windishagency

Fred Falke
Hometown:
Toulouse, France

French house producer and DJ Frédérick – you can call him "Fred" – Falke has released just one album but his resume of collaborations reads like the best party ever: U2, Grizzly Bear, Lana Del Rey, Robyn, Bastile, Ellie Goulding and so many others. His sets will, how do you say, go off.

R.I.Y.L.:
Daft Punk, Miike Snow, The Whitest Boy Alive

Ibeyi X Lrecordings

Ibeyi
Hometown:
Paris, France

Ibeyi is made up of 19-year-old French Cuban twins Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz. As if that’s not compelling enough, the girls channel songs from their father’s Yoruba culture, matching minimal percussion and piano melodies with their beautiful intertwining voices. Come only if you are prepared to be transported.

R.I.Y.L.: King Krule, Vampire Weekend, Bjork
