Word all over the street the past few days was that Australia's Soundwave festival had been cancelled for 2016 due to poor ticket sales. The country's festival community fell into mourning – but not for long. Less than 24 hours after its termination was announced John Sankey, drummer of Soundwave's would-be headliner Devil You Know, decided to put together a production team and carry out the festival without the help of a promoter.

Alongside a number of international and national acts, Sankey and his new team are looking for possible venues in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane for this Soundwave replacement – which has just been dubbed Legion – to go down early next year. No musical acts have been named as of yet. The plan is to launch a Kickstarter campaign in the coming days, making this event one of the world’s first fan-funded rock festivals. Any revenue generated above goal will be split amongst the bands who join Legion's roster.

We love when the festival community just won't take no for an answer. Perhaps this will inspire similar rescue missions for the likes of other temporarily fallen festivals like Wakarusa, Gathering of the Vibes, or Phases of the Moon?

Keep on the lookout for Legion's Kickstarter campaign to donate and help Australian festies make this effort a reality!
