If you're a lover of rock n' roll and music history, you were probably living it up at the first go-around of Desert Trip under the California sun this past weekend, where an absolutely inimitable lineup of rock legends gathered to rock thousands of baby boomers and their progeny.

Put on by festival pros AEG Live (yes the same folks who produce Coachella), this "classic rock Coachella," as it was christened news of it first broke earlier this year, was an event built to make history from the start. Not only had the company assembled a bona fide murderer's row of legends to perform – The Who, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and his band The Promise of Never, the Rolling Stones, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and Paul McCartney – but it promised spare-no-expense stage productions (so many fireworks!!!) and a solid weekend bursting with rock anthems – the stuff music lovers could only dream of, until now. Not only that – it marked the first time many of these rock acts would share the same stage for the first time in their respective, decades-long careers. Pile on luxurious offerings like premium seating (hey, some of us can't stand up for hours anymore like we used to), Airsteam RV camping, a on-site record store, and an all-star lineup of world renowned chefs and 40 of the best restaurants from Los Angeles to New York, and Desert Trip already had the makings of a damn good time.

Of course, the centerpiece was the music. Given the lineup, it was truly we-sold-our-souls-for-rock-n-roll type of music. The they-don't-make-'em-like-they-used-to stuff. You know? There was Bob Dylan's 15-song set that ran the gamut from “Rainy Day Women # 12 and 35,” “Simple Twist of Fate,” and “Desolation Row” to more recent songs like “Lonesome Day Blues” from 2001’s Love & Theft, to the ever-relevant "Masters of War" from 1963. There was the Rolling Stones, who treated fans to new tracks from their just-announced album “Blue & Lonesome,” then played “Mixed Emotions” for the first time since 1990, and even jammed on a cover of "Come Together" by The Beatles. Then Paul McCartney and Neil Young jammed together, singing “A Day in the Life,” John Lennon's “Give Peace a Chance,” and “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?” Heads surely exploded during that medley. The Who (Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, with excellent support from bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Zak Starkey) ripped into "My Generation," "Love Reign O'er Me," "Who Are You," and "Eminence Front." By the end of "Baba O'Riley," the entire crowd screamed in unison: "We're all wasted!" Roger Waters brought the heat with a simply earth-shattering 27-song set (he said he was employing the most powerful sound system he'd ever used), featuring "Money," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Wish You Were Here," "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" off Animals, complete with a massive flying pig sailing over the crowd and less-than-flattering imagery of Donald Trump.

Throughout the weekend, these musical kingpins imbued plenty of fresh meaning into these decades-old songs. There were no phoned-in performances. Each performer came out swinging to remind the thousands in attendance why they'd shelled out hundreds for tickets, rewrite history, and capture the hearts of all the non-baby boomers lucky enough to witness an event with a caliber so high it may never be duplicated.
