Held right when Ireland's climate switches from "damp nightmare" to "pleasantly temperate with a hint of sweat," Electric Picnic has crowds of around 40-some thousand, so you always feel like you're at a bona fide festival without the overwhelming crush of people swarming around you.

This year Electric Picnic sold out, thanks to a huge lineup featuring Belle & Sebastian, Blur, Alvvays, FKA Twigs, Florence + The Machine, Grace Jones, Interpol, Jurassic 5, Low, Ride, Róisín Murphy, Sam Smith, Tame Impala, The Vengaboys, Yasiin Bey, and many more fine-print artists who'll have you Googling and Shazam-ing after each unexpectedly great performance.

The festival has plenty of weirdness beyond its music lineup. Art Trails created by local and international artists wind under circus top tents, through fairytale forests and past psychedelic installations. The Global Green is also peppered with public art, but has a deeper focus on sustainability, recycling, eco-minded entrepreneurism, startups, activism and community organizing. Kiosks and stands focus on global do-gooding, set to a soundtrack of DJs and local bands.

Perhaps most impressive is the Trailer Park, which mixes up all of the above—the paintings, the graffiti, the installations, electronica, performance art, public theater and general mad cap-ed-ness—into an American trailer park/British caravan holiday camp. Restaurants, mini music venues, carnivals, micro performance spaces and a retro aesthetic colliding with hipster sensibility permeate the area. There's also tons of comedy and spoken word for an interesting, esoteric and occasionally abstract addition to the fest's vibe.
