The Hilltop Arena turned into a wildlife spectacle on Friday, August 29th, as Dirtyphonics cranked up the energy and showed that they "don't follow rules, they create them." With their new EP on the way, the guys couldn't wait to bring their fresh sounds to the crazed crowd at Electric Zoo New York. In this exclusive interview, they let us in about what they love most about Electric Zoo, what to expect with their new EP, being released on Dim Mak Records, and who they'd add to their band, given the chance.

Dirtyphonics Db Fest300 Zoo

DB: This isn’t your first time performing at EZoo so how do you plan on making this one special?
DP: Each time has been special but for this one we we will be playing some of the songs from our brand new EP coming out soon on Dim Mak records.

DB: What do you like best about EZoo?
DP: NYC has a very special energy and Randall’s Island is a beautiful venue. Watching the sun set over the East River is a beautiful thing.

DB: You guys claim to not follow rules, but create them. What rules have you created?
DP: We were one of the first ones to mix all genres of bass music in our sets and in the studio, and we created bridges between all this music using tempo switches and other tricks. It’s great to see how many people have embraced this now and how it has helped bring all these scenes together.

DB: If you could include one more artist in your band, who would it be and why?
DP: It would be sick to have Quincy Jones with us. His musicality is out of this world. Rick Rubin would obviously be another one…

DB: You joined Dim Mak records a couple of years ago. How is that? Has Steve thrown a cake in your face yet?
DP: Of course, we’ve been caked and we’ve caked Steve too! Being with Dim Mak is and has been incredible. We have complete creative freedom over what we do and the whole team is family to us. We love hanging out with them in LA or anywhere around the world at festivals and gigs.

DB: Your next EP is set to release pretty soon. Can you tell us a bit about that?
DP: We’re very excited about it! It’s our biggest body of work since the release of our debut album (“Irreverence”) and we’re very proud of it. We’re still putting on the final touches and we’ve gone further than before in exploring musical genres while keeping the Dirtyphonics sound and we have some awesome collaborations too! After the album we did a bunch of remixes for other artists (Linkin Park, Kaskade, Aoki…) as we didn’t want to jump straight into another big project. We wrote most of the songs faster than usual, we were really inspired. We knew what we wanted to do and the music came to life naturally. We actually wrote too much and it could’ve turned into an album but we wanted something more compact and to the point. We can’t wait to share it with our fans!

DB: Pretty legendary that you did “Where are you Now” with Zeds Dead and Bright Lights. What was that process like?
DP: It was easy and fun as it should be. The Zeds Dead guys rented a house in LA to write their EP and we went there one night to hang out, have a couple drinks and listen to their new tunes. When they played the draft of what became “Where Are You Now” we knew there was a great vibe that we could take to the next level. They gave us what they had started and we took this on the road with us (we were on the Excision tour at the time). We were really inspired, we added our touch and sounds and finished it pretty fast. It was only later, at EDC Vegas, that we met Heather Bright. She told us that the lyrics where actually written in Paris, where we’re from. How perfect is that?!

DB: What was the first album you bought with your own money?
DP: Metallica, Master of Puppets.

DB: Do you guys like to cook? If so, what can you cook best?
DP: We’re french so cooking is in our genes. We cook lots of different things, from the most complex fine french cuisine to the best post-gig multi-layered sandwiches and we’re still waiting to do a cookout battle with Dieselboy and show him how it’s done (laughs).

DB: Do you have any pets? What happens to them when you tour?
DP: No pets, they would die from hunger and loneliness as we’re constantly on tour.

DB: If you could pick any two DJs to be your parents, who would they be and why?
DP: Laurent Garnier for his musical knowledge and inspiration and Andy C for his skills.
