Most festivals can feel like small towns, with so many areas to explore, whole "residential" sites (i.e. where you put your tent up), communities and amenities like shops and restaurants, or food stalls. At the UK's BoomTown Fair, organizers go a step further by creating an actual town in the English countryside. This town (which is more like a wild frontier city designed to feel simultaneously utopian and dystopian) is then occupied by a population of music-hungry festies, who come from a range of backgrounds, all interacting and participating in the many activities the town has to offer, like a choose-your-own-adventure novel come alive. Actors help each themed district come to life, and some of Europe's best sound systems populate the festival's stages for maximum boom. For the thousands who join in the spirit by dressing in whimsical costumes and act just as wild, those four magical festival days take place in the greatest town on Earth.
Here are some photos to illustrate how entirely immersive and experiential BoomTown Fair truly is.
