Weekend One of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2017 is in the books. So, how did it go? Sunny skies on Friday and Saturday gave way to a stormy Sunday. Thunderstorms and lightning postponed performances at all 12 of Jazz Fest's outdoor stages (some until 3 pm or even later). Pitbull had to cancel his Sunday show, citing " flight safety and weather issues."
Despite his absence, revelers still got to enjoy hundreds of jazz, pop and rock's finest, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Galactic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dave Matthews Band, Trombone Shorty, Big Freedia, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Maroon 5, Lorde, Widespread Panic, Lorde, Blues Traveler and more. (That lineup doesn't include the countless after-hours shows in famous venues like Tipitina's, Rock N'Bowl and The Howlin' Wolf).
New Orleans is not just an oasis for music lovers. The city's cultural cache is off the charts, and the Big Easy has gained a reputation as one of North America's finest festival locations. Jazz Fest (along with Mardi Gras, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and BUKU Art + Music Project ) is peak time for the legendary New Orleans Krewes to flaunt flashy, vibrant vestments in an important display of the city's cultural subsections. Bourbon Street? It's the holy grail of Southern debauchery. The food? Even with Sunday's storms, plenty of mouth-watering Cajun cuisine was devoured - traditional dishes like Crawfish Monica , crab po' boys, crawfish strudel, jambalaya, crawfish bisque, fried chicken, heaps upon heaps of crawfish, and beignets. Did we mention crawfish? All in a day's work at Jazz Fest.
Feast on these tasty snaps from Weekend One!
