London can sometimes look a little drab, despite being the capital of England. As with most big cities, it's full of high-rise buildings, some old and some new, mostly with grey or red brick facades. Not the most invigorating palette, it must be said, especially in the middle of winter.

So, when a new festival of light, called Lumiere London , descended on the city this past weekend, the artists involved had a perfect blank canvas to play with. Across several central London locations, including busy shopping district Regent Street and tourist trap Trafalgar Square, a selection of amazing installations and dazzling light-based creations were on display, adding a whole new dimension to some of the capital's most famous sights.

The event attracted a huge amount of attention, with thousands of people flocking to the various locations and Instagramming the hell out of the amazing pieces of art, or even getting involved with some of the more interactive constructions.

It was truly a sight to behold and left adults and kids alike awestruck by the beauty and innovative designs. Check out some of the highlights in our gallery below.
