Virtual Reality has grown as a futuristic presence at festivals tremendously in the past couple of years, whether it's experiencing a festival through a VR-based app, or entering curated virtual reality worlds at tents on festival grounds. Now, VR's mainstream moment is here; Coachella will be broadcast in VR via cardboard virtual reality viewers and a VR app for mobile devices, which Coachella will ship to 2016 ticket holders.

This isn't some Oculus Rift-style device. It's an entry level cardboard viewer which, according to Venturebeat.com , this year's Coachella Welcome Box will include not only your entry wristband and welcome guide, but a free Coachella VR viewer with instructions for downloading the app via iOS, Android, and Samsung Gear VR app stores. In partnership with Vantage.tv, the viewer will let you watch live acts from a new vantage point, aimed at augmenting the already epic Coachella experience.

With the app, you can see 360-degree panoramic photos from previous festivals, virtual tours of the 2016 festival site and campgrounds, interviews, and performances by 2016 Coachella artists. More VR content will be released leading up to the festival. Users can stream high-res 360-degree video of the festival grounds while also exploring a digital landscape.

Always on the cutting edge, Coachella has long used to technology to push the boundaries of the music festival experience, from augmented earbuds, to projection mapping, to its infamous Tupac hologram. What will this mean for improvements at other major music festivals around the world? Something tells us we won't have to wait long to find out.
