The human body has been used as a canvas by people from all across the world for thousands of years. From the make-up of the Wodaabe to Maori tattoos, every culture in history has painted and adorned themselves in some form of celebration or ritual.

Like most things that proliferate the cultural landscape, there's a festival for that. One of the most colorful and dazzling festivals you are ever likely to see, actually: the World Bodypainting Festival, which takes place over the course of a week each year in picturesque southern Austria.

Here's a look at some of the stunning bodies of art from this year's event, which just wrapped up on July 6th.
