Earlier this week, just 500 miles removed from That Thing in the Desert™, enigmatic electronic music duo Daft Punk reportedly made an appearance at Forgotten City, a regional Burning Man event in Vegas.

After the exhilaration died down, the inquisition began. It appears that the two performers, decked out in Daft Punk's trademark futuristic space regalia, were just poking fun and paying homage to the epic rumor that’s been blowing around the Burner community for years. The Black Rock City perimeter trash fence protects the surrounding areas from glitter, feathers and trash that inevitably makes its way out of your possession and into the atmosphere, and the performance here did take place at the "Trash Fence" of Forgotten City – so you can see why it was befuddling.

The age-old rumor that the famed duo would play a secret set at Burning Man’s trash fence pokes fun at the enthusiasm many festival attendees have in tracking down insider information on A-list/headlining performers gone rogue. Of course, the joke is that Burning Man has no such stage to begin with.

Attendees reported the crowd as flabbergasted that the duo would actually show up to pay homage to the hilarious rumor. As the video demonstrates, the well-costumed crowd has a great time, despite the confusion. The stage was dazzling, the el-wire costumes were on point, and the music was energetically loud and clear. In the name of fun, does it really matter if it was actually Daft Punk under the helmets?
