Hometown talent and hometown pride dominated the second year of The Meadows Music & Arts Festival in Queens, New York, this past weekend. Produced by the masterminds behind Governors Ball Music Festival, thousands of attendees gathered at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens to celebrate one of the greatest cities in the world with music, cuisine, and art from the five boroughs and beyond.
More than any other festival in the world, New-York-bred talent was out in force on every stage at The Meadows. Brooklyn native Jay-Z – whose overall festival appearances are rare, to say the least – was the most anticipated act this year, and his set felt downright triumphant. Other Brooklynites who performed incuded Joey Bada$$, Sleigh Bells, Flatbush Zombies, TV on the Radio, and Antibalas. Ghostface Killah repped Staten Island, while De la Soul repped for Long Island. Jordan Bratton, Public Access T.V., and Dreamers showed up for Manhattan, and Queens natives Nas, Action Bronson, LL Cool J, Swet Sop Boys, and Heems did their home borough proud.
And surprise guests appearances were in abundance throughout the weekend. LL Cool J brought out Q-Tip and Jarobi White from A Tribe Called Quest, along with D.M.C. and Busta Rhymes. Future unvelied Nicki Minaj and Young Thug to run a couple of tracks together, while Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha joined festival darlings Run the Jewels. There was never a dull moment for lucky fans at Meadows this weekend.
