The Most Life-Affirming Festival Dance Party Ever, Caught From Every Angle

Six years have passed since a scantily clad man gyrated his way into our hearts by beginning the most epic impromptu dance party to ever grace a festival dancefloor, or dance-field, or maybe even dance-hill, at Sasquatch! in Washington state in 2009.

It’s become the stuff of legend. One minute, he’s a lone dance warrior, the next, a veritable techno shaman leading a legion of festival kids to boogie-laden absolution.

Hold on, though, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ve combed the archives to find this magical moment from every angle, so let’s start from the beginning. Before he ascended to festival legend, the hero of our dance party was like so many shirtless men at a festival –– some weird guy with even weirder dance moves getting down to Santigold:

The next account catches him right at the moment of magic. Shot from directly behind him, this video comes complete with its own peanut gallery. For seven whole minutes, a couple of guys yuk it up about how strange our dancer is...until they come to realize that he is starting a movement. You can actually hear the shock and surprise in their voice as it all goes down:

The prior video’s cameraman’s battery cuts out right as the real action starts, but lucky for us, a crew of kids sitting right in the midst of the madness had their phones out. At first, they’re beside the action, and then they’re a part of the action – whether they like it or not:

What follows is an account that shows the true scope of the moment. Hundreds of like-minded weirdos converge, and it’s a beautiful sight to behold...not to mention one of the most enjoyable displays of humanity on the whole internet. Next time you’re on the subway and sitting in silence, not connecting with anyone, think of this:

The morals of this story have not been lost. Not only is it a life-affirming bout of human interaction (are those not the point of festivals?), but there are lessons to be learned about leadership , as explained by Derek Sivers' 2010 TED Talk:

Now that 2015’s festival season is well underway, take inspiration from our dance shaman. Dance without fear, because those who want to join you might be just one crotch thrust away.
