Not long ago The xx announced its very own music festival, set to take place in Iceland, at that. It seemed like an ambitious plan for such a young band but their plans seemed fully formed from the get-go. Called Night + Day and on deck to run July 14-16, the festival invited a roster of international and Icelandic artists to perform at a waterfall called Skógafoss, including The xx, Jamie xx, Kamasi Washington, Warpaint, Earl Sweatshirt, Robyn, and more.

However, news came today that Night + Day got the axe. According to a statement from the band published in The Reykjavík Grapevine, the site in Skógafoss where the concert was to take place has been listed as an endangered area by the country’s environmental agency. “The promoters have been working non-stop to secure another location but regrettably there is nowhere suitable that can host the festival with such short notice,” the statement reads. Refunds will go to all ticket holders.

Part of the statement is below:

"We regret to announce that Night + Day Iceland will not be going ahead. The location for the festival at Skógafoss has recently been added to the Environment Agency of Iceland’s list of endangered areas and there is simply not enough time for the promoters to ensure that the event will have no impact at all on the site. The promoters have been working non-stop to secure another location but regrettably there is nowhere suitable that can host the festival with such short notice."

As the wave of Icelandic festivals continues to ebb and flow, perhaps The xx will end up finding a new home in the Land of Fire and Ice for Night + Day. We'll keep you posted.
