If you're looking to get a little weird this weekend, we can help start you on the right foot, er, fin. A 300 attendee merfolk (yes, including mermen, mermaids, and merkids) convention known as Merfest: A Gathering of Merfolk and Pirates went down earlier this month at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, North Carolina.

Turns out there was a lot more to do at Merfest than just look like a bedazzled mystical being straight out of a fairy tale. There was an open swim session, vendors selling $4000 custom-fitted, skin-like silicone tails, workshops exploring underwater modeling and holding one's breath, a swim with Professional Mermaid Hannah Fraser, an underwater fashion show, the fest's first-ever mermaid wedding, and a Mermaid and Pirate Ball.

Shot by photographer Arthur Drooker for his project "Conventional Wisdom," which delves into the industry of conventions in America and their "expressions of community, culture and connection," these gorgeous merfolk are definitely inspiration for anyone looking to shed their drama-laden, burdensome human lives and slip into something a little more fantastical for a change.
