About Washington, DC

Washington, DC, is the capital of the United States of America and home to the White House, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, which are famous throughout the world for being icons of American history and democracy. Each spring, D.C. hosts the month-long National Cherry Blossom Festival which celebrates the blooming of the city's 3,000 cherry trees donated by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912. The city is also home to many free-admission festivals and events hosted by the Smithsonian Institution that offer up theatrical works, concerts, art exhibits and food fairs. Revellers will find that D.C. has more to it than politics and public policy - it is a metropolis rich in heritage with a welcoming, vibrant population that prides itself on knowing how to relax and have a good time.

Every year, more than 70,000 people visit Washington, D.C., to check out the stunning cherry blossoms blooming throughout the Capital. The festival celebrates the growing relationship between D.C. and Japan, featuring an array of fun activities including parades, art exhibits, fashion shows and much more.

Capital Pride
It’s the biggest LGBT pride celebration in the nation’s capital, bringing thousands of people to the city to celebrate love, equality and acceptance. There are three stages’ worth of live entertainment, beverage gardens, a children’s area and the favorite Pride Festival & Concert on historic Pennsylvania Avenue.

Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle
D.C. may not be the barbecue capital, but this annual festival is every bit as finger-licking as the other barbecue festival juggernauts. Restaurants and pitmasters cook up their smokiest, most flavorful recipes for the title of National BBQ Champion. There are also three live entertainment stages, cooking demonstrations and athletic activities.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival
Presented by the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, this super fun and educational festival highlights cultures around the world through dance, music, arts and crafts, food and many other exciting traditions. It’s also free to attend!

Truckeroo
D.C.’s tastiest food trucks roll up to the Half Street Fairgrounds once a month from April to September to dish out all kinds of mouth-watering flavors. Whether it’s barbecue, tacos, gyros, pizza, frozen treats or a foreign recipe, you’ll likely find it here. Come hungry, and be ready to hop around to various trucks.

H Street Festival
This lively block party takes place along 11 blocks in a historical D.C. neighborhood, welcoming over 150,000 every year. Across 14 entertainment stages are a variety of music performances, dance, poetry, youth-based performances and much more. There are also activity stations that showcase local artists and promotes arts education.

ShamrockFest
As one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day festivals in the United States, you can expect plenty of Guinness, lots of debauchery and people dressed head-to-toe in green. There’s over 30 bands and DJs including a lineup of celtic bands, carnival rides and a whole lot of partying, but don’t worry, the luck of Irish is on your side.

Capital Fringe Festival
Anything goes at a fringe festival, and D.C.’s Capital Fringe Festival is no different. A lineup of local, high-energy artists perform live theater pieces, music, dance and other styles of performance art in front of an open-minded audience who don’t know what’s coming.
