About This Festival

Beyond Wonderland stages a helluva show. Yes, there's electronic music by the likes of Kaskade and Tiesto beating into your eardrums. But there's also a hookah-smoking caterpillar atop a giant mushroom on stage. And creatures handing out gigantic blue icing "Eat Me" cupcakes to the crowd. And human-size white rabbits frolicking around.

The fantastical rave takes its cues from Alice in Wonderland. "Embark on an adventure to the far side of the forest," the festival beckons, and it makes it happen via wandering, costume-clad characters, interactive art and wild backdrops to accompany the main acts.

Around 40,000 sexy twenty-somethings stream in for the two-day peace, love and dance scene. They don creative (and skimpy) outfits, their glitter sparkling and rainbow-colored beads bobbing to the spacey trance, dubstep and house beats. Everyone grooves alongside each other with no judgment. It really is a storybook realm.

Mushrooms & Mad Hatters

The layout divides into four main areas where the characters and settings from Alice in Wonderland come to life:

  • The Funk House: New to Wonderland, this enclosed stage is made from recycled wood panels that packs the funk and soul under one roof. Feeling a bit groggy? Relax in its lounges tucked in the corner for a mystifying view of the DJ.
  • Queen's Domain: This is the premier stage, decked out in the coolest finery. A giant hookah-smoking caterpillar sits on top of a massive mushroom at the stage's center. Big-name acts perform beneath the looming set piece, while psychedelic lights flash, spin and beam out over the throbbing crowd. Freaky graphics flare on jumbo screens. LED sea creatures surf overhead amid upraised, kandi-coated arms. And throughout it all, the caterpillar keeps on puffin,' sending plumes of smoke into the air.
  • Mad Hatter's Castle: It's a medium-size stage sans the over-the-top scenery of the Queen's Domain. Still, nearly 1,000 LED panels, booming speakers and an arsenal of lasers make for a brain-altering experience.
  • Cheshire Woods: The Woods is a springy, mid-size stage sending out lots of deep house beats.
  • The Funk House: New to Wonderland, this enclosed stage is made from recycled wood panels that packs the funk and soul under one roof. Feeling a bit groggy? Relax in its lounges tucked in the corner for a mystifying view of the DJ.

Art & Performers

Large-scale, interactive art installations add to the trippy ambience. In 2015 the action revolved around a giant projection-mapped Caterpillar where fest-goers were able to spin it around, the illuminated Dandelion Forest that gave Headliners a space to chill from the stimulation, and a human-sized chessboard where revelers danced with Wonderland performers.

Costumed performers are hired to mingle with the crowd. Keep an eye out for Sparkle Bunnies, aka ladies in white rabbit masks, go-go boots and bikinis. The Flower Chorus women sprout enormous pink petals from their head. The Enigmas dress in harlequin gear. The playful Lambs entice you to dance. And the white-faced Queen prompts you to bow down in respect, should you cross her path.

History & Past Headliners

The first Beyond Wonderland took place in 2010 in San Bernardino. The company that produces it also stages Electric Daisy Carnival, EDM's flagship event, going strong since 1997. So these folks know their stuff.

Beyond Wonderland ramped up twice in 2011: in San Bernardino in March and Seattle in May. In 2012 it bathed San Bernardino and Oakland in glowy lights, while 2013 saw San Bernardino and Mountain View feel the love. 2014 was an offbeat year. Not only was there just one event, but for the first time it was not in San Bernardino. Instead it took place in Mountain View in September.

Renowned acts that dig their amplified bass are the fest's hallmark. Past lineups include:

  • Dillon Francis, Slander, Carl Cox, Z-Trip, Benny Benassi, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Tiesto, and Green Velvet in 2015.
  • Above & Beyond, Kaskade, Destructo, DJ Snake, Candyland, Krewella, Henry Krinkle, Cedric Gervais, Mat Zo, R3hab and Dada Life in 2014.
  • Tiesto, David Guetta, Afrojack, Dash Berlin, Zeds Dead, Avicii, Gareth Emery, Arty, Markus Schulz, Steve Angello, Hardwell, Calvin Harris, Benny Benassi, Carnage and Datsik in 2013.
  • Alesso, Steve Aoki, ATB, A-Trak, John Digweed, Dirty South, Dirtyphonics, Thomas Gold, Infected Mushroom, LMFAO, Magnetic Man, Netsky, Sidney Samson, Porter Robinson and Sander Van Doorn in prior years.
