It’s funny to me how sometimes we can love something so much – yet when it comes to explaining why, it’s oddly difficult to put into words. This phenomenon rings true in the festival world more than we care to notice. I experience it often when I try to explain to others why these gatherings are so important to me…how I find such natural comfort in their mysterious allure. But why? Perhaps it’s because festivals – like laughter, a smile, a wave – have the ability to transcend the barriers created by language and culture. In this sense, the things that divide us in our mainstream lives are the same things that unite us at festivals around the world. Festivals are a universal language.
Whether you’re in Montreal, Ibiza, London or Busan, there are festivals around the world that are inspiring us to travel everyday. They ignite our cultural curiosity and keep us hungry for the unknown.
This month, we took a look at what festivals you all had your eye on around the globe. Check out our Top May Festivals Around the World!

Nestled along Morocco’s Atlantic Coast is the exotic, wind-strewn port town of Essaouira. In mid-May, half a million music lovers from Africa and all over the globe will travel to this vibrant city for Gnaoua World Music Festival – a celebration of Morocco’s sacred musical traditions and rich history. For the past 18 years, this global gathering has harbored the treasured, ritual rhythms of Africa’s Gnaoua music over the course of four days. Live performances take place at six different venues, each with their own unique vibe and purpose. Festival-goers can enjoy an eclectic mix of musical exuberance that is both authentically Moroccan and globally diverse. For its 19th anniversary, the festival will pay homage to Mahmoud Guinea, the man who made this world-renowned event what it is today.
